The Avalos Apprentice Program Origin Story
Where did they come from and where will they go?
They will go wherever their heart and passion take them as they venture out into the world as young adults, looking to make their way for themselves. However, this story started over a decade ago when two men served their community by implementing an NDT program at the high school level. This was the first of its kind in the Houston area, so it took some time to convince the authorities that it would be a good trade with a high earning potential for those who accepted the NDT challenge.
On a weary night, the students of Rosa Avalos P-Tech High School traveled to the far Southeast side of Houston, where they had never been before. Taking a step outside of their community took courage and strong leadership if they were going to make the most of this adventure, which they hoped would take them to the next chapter in their lives. The wheels of imagination were turning as they made their way that night. What would they learn, who would they meet, would there be food?
Upon arrival, many of the students stood in awe of the great opportunity that stood before them. The building stood tall against the orange/yellow sunset that made the moment even more magical. They made their way to the entrance, where they were met with open arms, and led to the main dining room where they were met by several Houston area NDT Leaders to discuss the promise of NDT. The night continued with a hearty four-course meal, entertainment, and opportunities to meet with members one-on-one. The idea of making their way in life as an NDT professional felt more like a reality than ever before as they discussed what they had learned on their drive home that night.
The days to follow brought energy and excitement as they were told that more opportunities would be coming their way, creating a buzz in class, hallways, and at the dinner tables. Their future seemed to be brimming with opportunities that were never available before. The possibilities to work in Oil & Gas, Aerospace, Aviation, Petrochemical, Transportation, and many more to come will feed them in more ways than materially. The work they will be performing will serve toward making the world a safer place.
