Science Fiction or NDT?

Why not both?

During a weld inspection at a local shop Magna and Captain Sonic discuss the poor surface condition of the weld cap and surrounding base metal. Surface porosity and spatter are often an indicator of poor welding processes and often lead to other problems.

Not to mention the added challenges these conditions cause for MT and UT interpretation.

While they continued their discussion the spatter seems to disappear and reappear.

Once they both realize it is an illusion for both of them they begin to look around the shop for a root cause.

Weld clamp on the end of the pipe has several weld leads hanging from it which lead to a weld machine near by.

Captain Sonic is quickly reminded of a recent ASNT Chat NDT podcast with Saptarshi Mukherjee, PhD where he discussed the effects of Electromagnetic Waves and how they might create a “Cloak of Invisibility” under the right conditions. This could be one of those conditions.

We need to get in touch with him and learn more so that we better understand this potential and prevent this from falling into the wrong hands.
